MISSION SERVE | WASHINGTON DC

We are so excited about the opportunity to serve this summer!

The vision of Breakaway Student Ministries is To Bring Hope To Our Generation. This hope, which we find in Jesus, is so important to us that we’ll follow Jesus anywhere to share it. One tangible way we get to do that is by serving those in need.

This summer, you will have the opportunity to serve people who are living in sub-standard housing by providing services they would not normally be able to obtain otherwise.

What will you be doing?  You will join a team of students from more several different churches to clean up and rebuild these neighborhoods. In doing this, you’ll be able to provide tangible help to people in need.

While working, you'll have the chance to get to know the homeowners you will be serving. You'll hear their story, have an opportunity to pray for them, and even be able to share about your own life and the hope that you have found in Jesus.

It’s our hope that these conversations along with your acts of service will help homeowners understand that they can find their ultimate help and hope in a God who loves them!

Frequently Asked Questions

WHO CAN ATTEND THIS TRIP?

Students who will be will be entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in the 2018-2019 school year and 2018 high school graduates.

WHAT ARE THE DATES OF THE TRIP?

Saturday, June 23rd through Sunday, July 1st.

WHERE ARE WE GOING?

Washington D.C.

WHY ARE WE GOING THERE?

This will be Mission Serve’s sixth summer serving in the nation’s capital. Mission Serve partners with the District of Columbia Baptist Convention to provide construction and ministry in the city.

WHAT IS THE COST OF THE TRIP?

$460.

WHERE ARE WE STAYING?

Luther Rice Memorial Baptist Church (801 University Blvd. W, Silver Spring, MD 20901).

Church groups will sleep in a local church with sections of the building divided between guys and girls sleeping areas.  Church groups will also stay together (i.e. guys from Central will stay in the same room together and girls from Central will stay in the same room together).

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

A comprehensive packing list is found in the Information Packet.

In short, you will need:

1) Duffle Bag/Suitcase for your clothes. Please pack this in as small of a piece of luggage as possible.

2) An Overnight Bag to use at any hotels we are staying in that has your toiletries, change of clothes, sleeping attire, etc. You will not have access to your large duffle bags/suitcases at the hotel.

3) A separate Tool Bag that includes the tools that you will need on the trip.

WHAT TYPE OF PROJECTS WILL WE WORK ON?

Mission Serve partners with local city governments to assist in the rehabilitation of substandard housing. Typical projects have included repairing and re-shingling roofs, construction of wheelchair ramps, indoor flooring and tiling, landscaping, painting, and home beautification.

WHICH PROJECT WILL I BE WORKING ON?

Students and leaders will discover which project they will work on when they arrive at their Mission Serve site. Students and leaders from all churches will be mixed and placed on a squad that they will serve together with for the week. Each squad will consist of at least one adult Squad Leader and one Construction Captain.

CAN I BE ON A SQUAD WITH MY FRIEND?

There's a possibility that you will be placed in a squad with another member of Central, but all squads are created by Mission Serve, not by our individual church leaders.  We can't promise anything about which squad or who you will be placed with.

It has been our experience that while students may enter into the week with a little hesitation because they will be with people from other churches, they end the week having shared great experiences with new friends that they'll remember for a lifetime.

WHAT IS THE TRAINING WEEKEND?

Our Training Weekend is a mandatory requirement for all students planning to join our Mission Serve team.  It is a time for you and your other team members to come together and begin to work as a team.  We will spend time getting to know each other, building trust in each other, and beginning to work together. We will take on a large project, where you will get some hands-on experience working with hand and power tools while having a chance to interact with your teammates in a setting similar to what you can expect on a job site at Mission Serve.

WHAT IS THE PACKING PARTY?

Our Packing Party will take place the night before we leave for our trip. All team members should bring their fully packed suitcase, their overnight bag, and their separate tool bag, which will be packed into our trailer.

All final payments, your Breakaway Liability Form, and your notarized Mission Serve Participant Form must be handed in by the Packing Party at the latest.

WHAT IS THE ALL NIGHTER?

Our All Nighter will take place immediately after our Packing Party. Students who are a part of the Mission Serve team are encouraged to spend the night at Central, where the team will have a night of fellowship and fun. This is a great time to get to know your teammates and it also makes it easier for you to be ready to leave at 4:45 AM the next morning.

ARE WE REALLY LEAVING AT 4:45 AM ON SATURDAY, JUNE 23RD?

Yes! Please be at Central on time and ready to go! You will have plenty of time to catch up on sleep during the trip to Mission Serve.

WHAT TIME WILL WE GET BACK ON SUNDAY, JULY 1ST?

We cannot give an exact time as to when we will be back to Central. On previous trips, have arrived between late afternoon to late at night. This all depends on traffic and weather conditions. We will have students be in contact with their rides when we are about an hour away from Central.

THE PROJECTS END ON SATURDAY, WHY ARE WE COMING HOME ON SUNDAY?

We spend time together as a team on the final weekend of our trip in order to debrief our experiences and what we have learned, as well as to relax and celebrate after a hard week of work.

The cost of meals (within reason), as well as your lodging, is included in the total cost of the trip.
